The Department of Energy on Wednesday named Project Prometheus a Phase II awardee under its Genesis Mission, committing $60 million over three years to embed AI tooling directly into advanced reactor design workflows. The program is led by Idaho National Laboratory alongside Oak Ridge, Argonne, and Sandia, with North Carolina State and Penn State on the university side. Nvidia and Amazon Web Services are the anchor compute and infrastructure partners; Microsoft is also involved.
Six reactor developers are participating. X-energy joined as a Tier 1 partner with $10 million in matching support and a board seat. Oklo is integrating Prometheus AI into its Aurora design pipeline. TerraPower, Westinghouse, and Aalo Atomics round out the private side. Standard Nuclear, the TRISO fuel manufacturer that IPO’d earlier this year, is the sole non-reactor company on the list.
NuScale was not selected. It has not received a DOE award since 2019.
The dollar figure is small relative to loan-office conditional commitments already outstanding, but the participant list matters. Every reactor company on the Project Prometheus roster also holds an existing hyperscaler procurement or DOE pilot slot. Amazon has a $700 million offtake with X-energy. Oklo cleared a criticality-adjacent DOE pilot milestone earlier this month. TerraPower is a Meta counterparty on the Wyoming Natrium buildout. Aalo has a fourth-pilot data-center pathway that broke cover in early July. Westinghouse’s AP300 sits inside the Trump administration’s fast-track deployment lane.
Prometheus, then, is not a standalone bet. It is a coordination mechanism that ties the labs, the hyperscaler capex flow, and the six developers most likely to reach a commercial gigawatt this decade into a shared design and licensing stack. NuScale’s absence signals that the coordination is happening around companies with active commercial pipelines and active hyperscaler dollars, not around whoever crossed a design certification finish line first.
For the supply chain, the read is straightforward. The advanced-reactor cohort is consolidating faster than the headline number of licensed designs suggests. Watch which of the six moves next on siting, fuel, or offtake. That is where the marginal gigawatt gets built.
